Student Led Conferences

Student-led conferences take the form of a conversation between the student and their caregiver. Students need to be at the centre of their learning conversations – let’s help them get there.

This approach gives students an opportunity to share with their whanau their goals as a learner. They accept accountability and responsibility for their progress and achievement, and demonstrate a growing understanding of their development as independent learners.

In student-led conferences all three parties - student, parents and the teacher - sit together and talk about the student’s learning, with the student taking an equal role. The student shows a range of evidence of learning that they have selected.  A student and their caregiver will need to spend 20-30min prior to talking with the teacher going through their personal goals, evidence of learning and reflection.  The 10min discussion time at the end with all three parties is to clarify goals and key points.

Student-led goal setting conferences @ HJHS aim to:

  • help students demonstrate evidence of learning

  • teach students the process of reflection and self-evaluation

  • facilitate the development of students' organisational and oral communication skills and to increase their self-confidence

  • encourage students, parents, and teachers to engage in open and honest dialogue

  • encourage students to accept personal responsibility for their learning

  • increase parent understanding of their child’s learning through improving attendance at and satisfaction with the reporting process.
