USE OF CHEMICALS IN AND AROUND THE SCHOOL
Where chemicals are used to control weeds, pests or disease is necessary, applications will be made safely and in accordance with manufacturer’s guidelines. Wherever practical non-chemical measures will be used to control or eliminate undesirable plants, pests and diseases in the school environment. At times, however, chemical controls may be necessary. In these circumstances the risk to the School community shall be minimised.
To ensure a safe physical environment for staff and students.
i. Major applications of chemicals must be approved by the BOT Property Committee and then scheduled, unless inappropriate allowing for seasonality of applications, during the school holidays when the property is largely uninhabited.
ii. Any local or minor applications must be outside of school hours – those being defined as 8.00am – 5.00pm on weekdays and allowing for weekend use of fields. An exception would be minor applications made as part of teacher instruction in Horticulture and with the authority of the Leader of Learning Science.
iii. The chemicals must be applied in accordance with manufacturers instruction and the person applying the product must be qualified to do so.
iv. Appropriate protective clothing will be worn by the person/s applying the product.
v. No other person shall be in the vicinity without appropriate protection.
vi. Notice of the use of chemicals as part of the plant and pest control programme will be advertised through the Notices and signs warning of the use of chemicals will be displayed in the area affected during application.
vii. Written objections to any particular application of chemicals should be heard by the Property Committee before permission to proceed with the application is confirmed.
This policy is reviewed as part of the Board’s review cycle.
